![]() A Sunny Day for a Happy Kick-off
On Monday September 21, 2009, with the sun shining down, the Delaware Children’s Museum officially broke ground at our new home on the Riverfront in Wilmington. The biggest announcement of the day was made by President of the Board Lisa Lessner, who shared the opening date of the Museum: April 24, 2010. In what was coined an “appropriately silly affair” by Wilmington’s The News Journal, the Ground Breaking was celebrated joyfully and enthusiastically. Kazoos, noisemakers, and juice boxes created a playful vibe that only grew in impact when a third grade Kuumba Academy Charter School choir received a standing ovation for their mini-concert. These inspired kids donned hard hats and colorful shovels to “break ground”—since we are only refurbishing an old building, there wasn’t actually true ground to break. Instead, we constructed a sand box and filled it with treasures for the kids to discover amid squeals of delight. Executive Director Julie Van Blarcom publicly detailed—for the first time—the incredible founding corporate and foundation sponsors of the DCM. Quite simply, we would not have been able to announce our opening date without their generous and ample support, and we thank each and every one of them for their continued endorsement of the DCM. Stay tuned for a New Sponsor page still under construction.
![]() OOPS!
Even the best-laid plans backfire sometimes, and we must humbly note that our friends at Best of Delaware were unintentionally omitted from the announcements at the Ground Breaking. We are very grateful for the entire team from Best of Delaware, who have generously supported the DCM for the past two years at their tremendous Best of Delaware events. ![]() Remarkable Remarks
The development of the Delaware Children’s Museum has garnered attention and support from every level of government throughout Delaware. We were immensely honored that the entire state Congressional Delegation and our elected officials at the county and city level joined the Ground Breaking. Thoughtful and personal remarks were made by: Senator Carper (D-DE), Senator Kauffman (D-DE), Representative Castle (R-DE), County Executive Coons, Mayor Baker, and Mike Purzycki of the Riverfront Development Corporation.
By joining the 400 children’s museums already open across the world, the DCM is poised to make a huge impact upon each and every layer of our community: the Riverfront, the City of Wilmington, New Castle County, and the State of Delaware.
On April 24, 2010, Delaware joins nearly every other state in the U.S. by supporting a children’s museum.
