Director of Marketing and Communications

 

Position Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications oversees the Museum’s paid and unpaid messages in the market. The Director of Marketing and Communications oversees advertising, promotions, communications, public relations, research, Membership program, and sales. This position also oversees the Museum’s branding and development of all collateral, graphics, and website presence on behalf of all departments.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Determine Museum’s marketing strategy and tactics by developing a comprehensive marketing
    and sales plan annually.
  • Review and place paid advertising on behalf of the Museum.
  • Leverage paid media with promotional exposure to enhance marketing presence in the marketplace.
  • Prepare a comprehensive communications plan that will cover a variety of emergency and crises situations.
  • Prepare schedule of public relations activity including schedule of press releases and events.
  • Work closely with Institutional Advancement when working with partners.
  • Develop a sales strategy for schools and groups. Prepares campaign for attracting schools and groups.
  • Network with other non-profits to stay abreast of marketing trends.
  • Manage the Museum’s website and oversees social media.
  • Develop the Museum’s brand and serves as a clearinghouse for all department materials to ensure consistent presentation across all platforms: in house signage and graphics, paid media, printed materials, and letterhead.
  • Develop strategy and tactics for Membership program, including pricing and benefits at different levels.
  • Oversee outside contractors for graphics, printing, public relations and website management.
  • Develop a calendar of events in coordination with Education, Operations, and Institutional Advancement.
  • Develop and monitor department budget goals.
  • Develop annual plans, strategies, tactics, and resources to reach goals with Operations staff.
  • Participate in the development of the Museum’s plans and programs as a tactical partner in evaluating and advising on the impact of long range planning.
  • Ensure performance targets are met.
  • Develop a plan for unexpected closings for announcement on website, voice mail, local media, and social network.
  • Prepare and deliver management reports on departmental activities to staff and board.
  • Identify opportunities and work with the Director of Institutional Advancement to attract outside funding sources.
  • Participate in professional societies and activities to stay current with business trends.
  • Participate with senior management in the ongoing planning and programming of the Museum.
  • Attend events and programs as a representative of the Museum.
  • Manage by adhering to the Museum’s policy and practices in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Implement improved processes to generate the best possible workflow.
  • Build and maintain a strong functional team through coaching, team building and succession planning.
  • Hire, train, develop, and appraise staff effectively.
  • Consistently work in a positive and cooperative manner with all DCM staff.
  • Respond promptly to guest needs.
  • Participate in continuing educational opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Complete assignments in a timely manner and with Museum’s standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experienced marketing professional with a diverse understanding of: advertising, communications, social media, membership programming, and brand oversight.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or equivalent related experience.
  • Effective leadership skills that can energize work teams to respond to the Museum’s business needs.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Proven record of leading in a collaborative work structure.
  • Must have the ability to participate effectively in teams.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Experience with problem analysis and creative resolution.
  • Solid working experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to retrieve files and data quickly.
  • Must have ability to prioritize and plan work activities in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage multiple work demands, and adjust to delays and unexpected events.
